Netflix's 'Damsel' Ending Explained: Does Elodie Survive the Dragon?

Damsel, Millie Bobby Brown's new dark fantasy film, has just been released on Netflix - and it is not a fairytale. What occurs at the end of Damsel, and can Elodie escape the dragon? Continue reading to see the film's action-packed climax.
Damsel, directed by Oscar nominee Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, stars Brown as Elodie, a princess from a destitute nation who accepts to marry a much wealthy prince to aid her people. But when Elodie discovers that her new royal family intends to sacrifice her to satisfy an old debt, she is thrown into a cave with a fire-breaking dragon.
Elodie must rely on her brains and skills to survive rather than hoping for a knight in shining armor to save her. "She's a damsel.

Fresnadillo praised Dan Mazeau's script for Damsel, which took the concept of a fantasy adventure and a princess and dragon story and converted it "into a place [where] it's completely upside down." The Spanish filmmaker told Tudum, "It was a very intense adventure that I was extremely excited to conceive and produce. At its core, this is a wonderful narrative of a young lady growing into a strong, independent, and confident adult. Elodie does not have any support. "It's a true survival experience."

Wright, who plays the film's antagonist, Queen Isabelle, spoke with Screen Rant about what it was like to play a villain. "It's really fun playing a layered character like that; that has nothing to do with you," she said. "She is doing it for a very worthy reason. It's to uphold the kingdom, thus she doesn't want to break tradition."

Angela Bassett, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, and Brooke Carter complete the star-studded lineup. (Warning: There are spoilers for Damsel's finale on Netflix.)

‘Damsel’ Ending Explained

Damsel debuted on the streaming giant on Friday, March 8. If you've already seen the Netflix film, continue reading to learn about Damsel's dramatic climax, including whether Elodie survives, what happens to her sister, and the destiny of the royal family.

Why Does the Dragon Kill the Princesses in Damsel?

The dragon targets princesses from Queen Isabelle's royal family because of what her forefathers did ages ago. They broke into the female dragon's lair and slew her only three children, effectively terminating the dragon's bloodline.

To make amends for their transgressions, the monarch of the time swore to give the dragon three princesses from his family per generation so that the creature would not destroy the new realm. However, the king's family devised a plan to deceive the dragon by providing her with princesses who were unrelated to them. They recruited young girls to marry into the family and compelled them to perform a blood rite that convinced the dragon they were linked to Queen Isabelle.

Does Elodie Escape The Dragon In Damsel?

Yes, Elodie discovers how to escape the dragon after discovering a map of the cave engraved on the walls by another princess, but it does not explain how to exit.

Her father and his soldiers walk into the cave to save her, but the dragon discovers them. Elodie watches from a distance while the dragon interrogates her father and slaughters his troops. Knowing that Elodie can hear him, he confesses that he pledged her life in exchange for gold. "Forgive me," her father tells her before he dies.

Elodie uses her father's rope to exit the cave. She hides outside from the dragon, who is anxiously looking for her. Despite her successful escape, she is compelled to
go back into the cave to save her sister Floria, who was sacrificed by Queen Isabelle since Elodie failed to complete the ceremony.

Elodie eventually locates Floria, but her sister's leg was severely hurt in the fall. Elodie and the dragon engage in a deadly combat, and she utilizes the dragon's fire to injure the creature. While the beast is injured and defenseless, she explains that they were both duped: the dragon had believed for years that the princesses she had been killing were of the royal family's bloodline. When Queen Isabelle chopped the damsels' hands, Elodie's blood mixed with the others'.

How Does Damsel End?

At the end of Damsel, Elodie disrupts another royal wedding in which they attempt to recruit the third victim to sacrifice. She orders the other princess to go, and the dragon emerges, seeking vengeance and slaughtering Queen Isabelle and her family.

In the closing scene, Elodie, her stepmother, and Floria are all reunited. Elodie informs her stepmother that they would control the kingdom together. They take a ship returning home, and as they sail into the sunset, the dragon flies beside them.

Damsel is currently streaming on Netflix.
